his Theatre was the first to be build in the State of Alagoas, under the sponsorship of the Sete de Setembro Philharmonic Society; to a design by Luiz Lucarini. It starts out in the
luso-brazilian tradition, but is transitional towards eclecticism. It displays a preference for elements from the Italian Renaissance, such as curved
pediments and
pilasters; the resulting contrast of light and shade suggest the sensibilities of the eclectic period.
The building remained in good conditions until it was acquired by the municipal authorities, when it was wholly abandoned. It is now completely restored, by the Secretariat for the National Historical and Artistic Heritage (SPHAN), with funding from the Federal Government.
